Acura Integra History

2023 Acura Integra

Acura has 40-year history behind it with world-class engineering, high performance, and outstanding vehicles. The Acura Integra has been vital to the brand, even though the nameplate took a hiatus for 15 model years while the Japanese automaker figured out how to present its luxury vehicles to the rest of the world.

Acura Integra Generations

The Acura Integra debuted in American markets in 1985 in Japan. Let’s take a look at each generation and how it differs from the next:

First Generation Acura Integra (1985 to 1989)

This generation was the only one with 3-, 4-, and 5-door models thanks to a hatchback. Most of the first-generation models were sold in the United States with 228,000 units sold worldwide, a pretty good start for what would become a solid sedan for luxury car owners.

Second Generation Acura Integra (1989 to 1992)

The second generation introduced the first VTEC engine and sales of the four-door sedan outside of Japan for the first time. A coupe body came into the market as well, which was slightly longer than its sedan sibling. Then-Emperor Akihito drove an Acura Integra on the grounds of the palace until he became too old to drive.

Third Generation Acura Integra (1993 to 2000)

Generally regarded as some of the best FWD drive cars ever produced, the third generation of Acura Integra cars saw even more sales in the United States than before.

What year was the best Integra? Car enthusiasts see the 1997 Acura Integra Type R as one of the best sports cars in history because it represented a shift in Acura’s thinking of moving away from the luxury market and focusing on fast, sporty cars. This sportiness would come in handy later as a ‘96 Integra appeared in some of the Fast & Furious movies.

Fourth Generation Acura Integra (2001 to 2006)

The Acura RSX sold in the United States for five years, before Acura discontinued the line because of the decline in the coupe body style. More and more car buyers favored SUVs and sedans. While the move allowed the automaker to streamline operations, its popularity in Japan forced Acura to make 150 more models than they expected before shuttering the line.

Fifth Generation Acura Integra (2022-Present)

The Acura Integra triumphantly returned in 2022 for model year 2023, and, well, it looks pretty darn good as a five-door liftback. The robust engine compartment supports a luxurious cabin. However, car enthusiasts can’t wait to get behind the wheel of a 2023 Acura Integra Type S, including a version with a manual six-speed transmission.
