The 1990s: Acura Supercar Victories

Acura has been involved in American Motorsports since its inception, having been a member of Sports Car Club of America and the IMSA GT Championship since the 1980s. In 1991, Comptech installed the then-current NSX V6 engine into its Camel Lights Spice Prototype, and the Spice Prototype went on to win the Lights Championship in its first year. This winning collaboration between Acura and Competch went on to win the Lights Championship again, both in 1992 and 1993. The Camel Lights Spice Prototype also enjoyed class wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona races of 1991 and 1992, as well as the 12 hours of Sebring race in 1993. In 1994, however, the IMSA GT Championship changed the rules, and the Spice Prototype was no longer compliant.

Fortunately, Acura was adaptable, and shifted to touring car racing. Enter the NSX. IN 1996, Acura paired up with Realtime Racing and entered the NSX into the SCCA World Challenge, where it won the final two races. In 1997, Acura and Realtime Racing took lower class championships with Acura Integra models, and in 1998, the Integra won the Touring Championship. In 1999, the Integra came within a few points of taking the championship, losing by a slim margin.

The 2000s: Acura and Realtime Racing

In 2000, the Integra bounced back, taking the championship! It again took the touring championship in 2001. Despite this, the Integra was replaced by the Acura RSX in 2002, and the RSX was joined by the Acura TSX in 2004. To this day, Realtime Racing continues to enter the Acura RSX and TSX in the SCCA, where they perform well. Acrua continues to race them as touring cars in the KONI Challenge Series. As for the Acura supercar NSX, it was retired from the top GT class in 2002. Other key moments for the 2000s, include:

  • 2007: Acura developed a number of Le Mans prototypes and teamed up with Andretti Green Racing, Fernández Racing, and Highcroft Racing with the intention of entering the American LeMans Series’ LMP2 Class. The prototypes debuted at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2007. The Andretti team took second place overall and first place in the LMP2 Class. Fernández took 3rd place overall. Highscroft took sixth.
  • 2008: Acura introduces B-Spec racing cars and introduces a fourth team, ALMS.
  • 2009: Acura released its first LMP1 Class supercar, the Acura ARX-02a.

The 2010s: Returning to Form

  • 2010: All Acura prototypes were rebadged as Honda Performance Development cars, and Acura disappeared from motorsports until 2013.
  • 2013: Two Acura ILX models entered into 25 Hours of Thunderhill but were retired due to engine problems.
  • 2014: The ILX returned to 25 Hours of Thunderhill, won in its class, and placed 8th overall.
  • 2017: The Acura supercar NSX GT3 goes back to work, racing in non-American championships as a GT with factory support from Pirelli World Championship, and as a GTD with support from the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Introducing a New Acura NSX TYPE S for 2022

The 2022 Acura NSX TYPE S is handbuilt at our Performance Manufacturing Center by world-class technicians. Only 350 models have been made globally. Heavy implementation of carbon fiber keeps down weight to reduce drag, and every contour of the NSX design is sculpted to channel wind resistance into downforce, intensifying acceleration at your local track in greater Garden City. Inside the frame, you’ll find 3D-Quenced ultra high-strength steel tubing, that’s as rigid as it is lightweight. This helps to ensure that weight reduction doesn’t hamper safety. Let’s take a look at some other NSX highlights:

  • Performance: The 2022 Acura NSX TYPE S is powered by twin-turbo charger electric motors: a GT3 EVO and Sport Hybrid. Together, these motors generate 600 hp. This electric Twin Motor Unit provides the NSX with Sport Hybrid SH-AWD®.
  • Drive Modes: Run errands around Glen Cove in Quiet Mode, or break records at your local track with Aggressive Downshift Logic.
