Safety Engineering Excellence Award From DoT
Acura engineer, Eric Heitkamp, was awarded a Safety Engineering Excellence award from the U.S. Department of Transportation for inventing a new type of airbag. This is the highest honor the Department of Transportation awards. So, what is this new airbag design?
Standard on the Acura TLX and Acura MDX, the new front-passenger airbag was designed to integrate findings from a landmark study on brain injuries. This new three-chamber airbag design effectively reduces the risk of brain injury during an accident. Original airbags feature one inflatable chamber. With three inflatable chambers, this new airbag uses one uninflated panel to gently catch the passenger’s head and decelerate its movement. It then redirects the passenger’s head towards a crevice between two inflated panels, which cradle and protect the head.
2023 Acura International Institute for Highway Safety Awards
Three 2023 Acura models earned the top award from the International Institute for Highway Safety. The 2023 Acura Integra, 2023 Acura MDX, and 2023 Acura RDX all earned a Top Safety Pick+ award*. That’s literally 75% of the current Acura model lineup, which is to say that, Acura has quite a case for being one of the safest brands in automotive.
